Commercial Art (CIP 50.0402)

The Commercial Art program spans a number of areas related to visual communications. Students prepare layouts and design artwork for magazines, newspapers, books, posters, flyers, and packaging. Students will also gain experience with photography, illustration, web design, and basic animation. While learning about these areas of study, students will compile a portfolio to show potential employers or prepare for college entrance interviews. There is heavy emphasis placed on thinking, problem-solving, design, and creativity. Students enrolling in the Commercial Art program will be taught trade skills through a hands-on learning process. This instructional format will allow students to experience a variety of hands-on and digital art/design projects. Coupled with hands-on learning, each student will receive individual attention with a focus on theory and skill development. The additional theory to be addressed includes art terminology, design vocabulary, basic math skills, textbook reading, as well as written and verbal communication skills. As a course that prepares students for working in a professional field, students are expected to maintain professional and responsible work ethics and habits.
