PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Allied Health Science Technology program is designed for college-preparatory students who are interested in pursuing a medical or health science career after high school. Instruction is provided in the basic skills in a variety of areas associated with health occupations such as health and medical services, pharmaceutical and medical instruments and supplies. Instruction includes but is not limited to foundations of health; anatomy and physiology, legal, ethical and economic aspects of health care clinical laboratory procedures; basic health occupational skills; aseptic techniques; OSHA regulations’ and infection control. The clinical segment of the program provides students with a wide variety of experiences in the various departments of a health care facility. Mentors in specialty areas provide an overview of scope and nature of practice, career opportunities, post-secondary education requirements, practical experience, integration of health care systems, and ongoing professional development requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Students need to be in good physical health with documented negative PPD testing and up to date immunizations. A physical must indicate the employee’s ability to lift thirty pounds. An employee may be on their feet for an extended period of time. Work hours often include week ends, holidays, evenings and nights. Job hazards include back injuries and exposure to needle sticks and blood borne pathogens. There is generally a professional staff that is willing to provide support. Physician’s offices, hospitals, long term care facilities and homes are just some of the health care settings where employment can be found.
PROJECTED SALARIES
Depends on the level of education:
Range from $19.72 to $27.78
EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK
Job opportunities in health care are plentiful with monetary incentives for new employees. There is a definite need for more health care workers. Many employers offer tuition reimbursement to further one’s education. In addition to employment growth, vast numbers of job openings will stem from replacement needs as experienced workers find other jobs or retire. Heath care needs continue to increase with the aging of the “baby boomer population”.
